Excel 2007 brought a host of new functions to Excel that were missing in Excel 2003. One of these functions was AVERAGEIF which returns the average (arithmetic mean) of all the cells in a range that meet a given criteria. One essential function that is still missing is MEDIANIF or MEDIAN IF which should ideally return the median of all the cells in a range that meet a given criteria.

However, with a little bit of array formula magic, you can easily create your own MEDIAN IF function. Here’s how you go about it.

You might want to get hold of the excel file from the bottom of this post to get hold of the excel data that I will be using in this example.

The problem

Once you’ve opened up the excel file, you’ll note the following series.

The series is the 2012 real GDP growth of countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Emerging Asia as per IMF’s World Economic Outlook Database, April 2013.

If you’d like to calculate the Median GDP growth rate for CEE or Asia, you can go about it the manually painful way of selecting each cell individually, something like:

=MEDIAN(D5,D8,D10,D13,D15:D16,D20,D22:D23,D29,D34:D35,D37,D43)

As you can see this is totally cumbersome to use. Firstly, you need to manually select each sell. If you have larger sets of data, you’ll probably spend the night in office finding the MEDIAN!

It’s not flexible, since the moment you add or remove line items or reorder them, your formula breaks.

MEDIAN IF – The solution

MEDIAN IF isn’t a function in Excel yet. But, using a combination of MEDIAN and IF, you can easily create your very own MEDIAN IF formula, without any VBA.

The syntax is simple:

{=MEDIAN(IF(range=criteria,median_range))}

It is the IF function nested within the MEDIAN function. The reason I show the curly brackets above is because this is how Excel displays array formulae.

Range is one or more cells to average, including numbers or names, arrays, or references that contain numbers.

Criteria is the criteria in the form of a number, expression, cell reference, or text that defines which cells are averaged. For example, criteria can be expressed as 32, “32″, “>32″, “apples”, or B4.

Average_range is the actual set of cells to average. If omitted, range is used.

e.g. to get the CEE Median in our example file, we use the following formula. Note that this is an array function. In order to enter the formula you need to hit CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER on your keyboard instead of just ENTER.

The company has gone yet another step in securing its network by adding two-step verification for all accounts. You don’t have an app currently for the second step to generate the number, but you will receive a text message instead with this.

How to enable two-step verification on LinkedIn

1. Visit your Settings page. You’ll be asked to sign in.
2. Select your Accounts tab and then Manage security settings
3. Under Two-step verification for sign-in, hit Turn On and follow the prompts
4. In the future, if you sign in from an unknown device, LinkedIn will send an SMS (text message) to your phone with a number which you will need to enter to complete the second step

Do you check on Facebook every other minute, even at work or at school? Do you think about going on Facebook when you’re not on Facebook? Do you spend every waking moment on Facebook? Are you on Facebook right now, updating your status to say

TRYING TO BREAK FREE FROM FACEBOOK. FAILING.?

If you nodded along (and switched tabs to check on Facebook), then you must be addicted.

Just the fact that you’re reading this article right now must mean you’ve come to accept the truth. Now you want to break free from that site’s comforting clutches that probably cost you precious time writing proposals, making presentations, or studying for that exam that you need to pass to graduate.

But it’s just…so… hard.

Admitting you’re an addict is the first step to recovery, so kudos to you for taking that step. Now what?

1. Consider what you’re doing on Facebook.

Are you making genuine connections with new people? Unearthing childhood memories? Starting up your affiliate marketing business by making a lot of connections with people and companies?

Or are you just checking out pictures of cats in funny poses? Answering some quiz to see what kind of ironing board you are? Maybe you’re only playing one of the many farm simulators.

Now record how much time you’re spending on these frivolous things. Don’t be surprised to see hours upon hours of wasted time.

2. Consider what you can be doing when you’re not on Facebook.

When was the last time you actually engaged another person in a face-to-face conversation? Get out there and meet real people.

You can also go back to old hobbies you’ve left behind like reading a book (a physical copy!), writing short stories, or biking. Speaking of biking, you can also be hitting the gym and getting fit.

There are plenty of activities you can get yourself lost in for a couple of hours a day that are infinitely more productive than browsing your friends’ drunk photo albums or updating your status to say how bored you are.

3. Now set some time to visit Facebook ONLY FOR THE IMPORTANT THINGS.

Checking up on your family and friends can be one of those things. Refreshing your newsfeed just to see the latest image macros and memes isn’t. And by “set some time,” I mean an actual schedule when you can check, and not every five minutes or when you feel like it.

Quitting cold turkey is incredibly hard, and you don’t have to completely sever your online ties in the first place. Just spend less time, and stick to your schedule.

If the temptation is rising to check Facebook, get off your computer. If you’ve got a smartphone, you probably have Facebook on it, too. Uninstall the app. Believe me when I tell you that you really don’t need to be checking for Facebook updates when you’re on the go, especially when you can just receive and send your own messages.

Inconveniencing yourself like that will remove the impulse of pulling out your phone to go on Facebook for no apparent reason.

4. Deactivating your account for a day can be a great help as well.

All you have to do for that is to go to your Account Settings, click on Security, and “Deactivate your account.” If you can stretch this out for a couple more days or even a week, then you should be well on your way to recovery.

5. If nothing works, the last resort would be to just quit Facebook for real by deleting your account.

Just go to the account deletion page here – https://www.facebook.com/help/delete_account and click on the button “Delete My Account.” You will not be able to reactivate your account, and everything you ever put in it will be deleted permanently.

I hope it doesn’t ever come to that ultimatum, as Facebook in itself can be a very useful tool. But if you believe it has controlled your life to the extent that you can’t make a single move without checking it, you do what you must to break free.

Gmail today unveiled a new inbox view that brings back control to email. The new Gmail inbox will automatically sort your emails based on who you receive them from and all are easily accessible by a familiar tabbed interface.

Your key emails will automatically show up in Primary and serves as the default inbox that you can access either from you desktop, Andoird or iOS mobile app.

You have additional tabs, viz. Social, Promotions and Updates. You can choose to star emails, which will always appear in your Primary box and drag and drop messages between the various tabs, giving you further choice of how you want to classify your emails.

The new inbox is being rolled out gradually to all users. The desktop, Android and iOS versions will become available within the next few weeks. If you’d like to try out the new inbox on Desktop sooner, keep an eye on the gear menu and select Configure inbox when it appears in the Settings options.

Google, while being a company that most people automatically associate with highly professional quality services, is no more immune to failures and fiascos than any other major digital technology corporation.

This is something that every single Google user should never let themselves forget, and even less so the more they depend on the Google giant for many of their online data storage and work management needs.

This applies especially when it comes to the security you need in order to protect your digital information in a way that will keep it from being totally erased, hacked or stolen. Also, this is where Google, despite its reputation, can be surprisingly weak unless you yourself take proactive steps to change that.

Luckily however, doing that sort of thing –changing your Google passwords from insecure, weak little things into something strong and robust—isn’t really all that hard, and it’s especially effective when coupled with a few additional security strategies after the fact.

That said, let’s get down to explanations:

The Power of Two Factor Authentication for Google passwords

Two factor authentication or TFA in short, is the core strategy that Google has implemented in an effort to boost the security of all its data services since several attacks against Gmail and Google accounts in general made a lot of users nervous back in 2011, 2012 and even 2013.

Oddly though, despite the implementation of TFA and a fairly strong campaign of notifications advising users of the option while they are using the company’s services, actual usage hasn’t been as widespread as it should be. This has been a contributing cause to continuing attacks despite the new security strategy with the end result of making Google still look insecure even though its two factor systems are indeed quite powerful as protection tools.

You as a Google user shouldn’t let yourself fall into the lazy trap of foregoing TFA protection, especially since setting the process up for any or all of your different Google accounts is really quite easy.

Your first step is to head on over to the following page: http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=180744&rd=1

Once you’re there, the process you’ll need to follow is really simple as far as setup goes; first, you’ll need to set your country, hand over the name of the Google account you use for most of your important online Google apps, type in your password and access the authentication setup page.

You can also reach this same setup page from right inside your Gmail account by clicking on the name of your email address in the right corner of your account, clicking on “settings”, scrolling down to the “Security tab on the left side and –once you’ve clicked on it—opening the 2 factor authentication setup section that appears to the right in the menu options that are available.

Whichever way you go about accessing two factor setup, you’ll essentially be prompted to hand over the number of at least one mobile device to which your authentication passwords can be sent each time you try logging in from a device that’s unrecognized by Google. This will be a bit of a pain in the butt, but it dramatically improves your account’s hacker resistance levels.

Additionally, you might also want to take a few minutes to generate several advance one time passcodes for future situations in which your mobile device isn’t at hand and you’re logging in to your account from a device you’ve never sued before. These can be written down somewhere and stored securely for later eventualities.

Both the passkeys thereafter sent to your mobile device and the several single-use written passkeys that you generated while setting up TFA for your Google account and mobile device are based on an algorithmic process called TOTP (Time Based One Time Password) technology. In essence, this will guarantee that each of the keys created for your security is highly unique, never reused and highly random in its creation.

There you go; if you’ve followed the above simple steps, you now have a TFA protected Google account that will elevate your security whenever you log into all the applications to which the account is connected –such as Gmail, Drive, Google+ and other services. From now on, any time you log in from an unrecognized device, you’ll have to enter your original basic password and a key that’s either sent to your cell phone or one of the written keys you had generated when setting up TFA.

Your main work or business related account is obviously the one you should be most worried about securing, but If you have multiple Google accounts, you can and should go ahead and set up distinct 2 factor systems in all of them for maximal security.

A Few Extra Security Tips

Now that you’ve set up TFA on your account, you can’t just leave it at that; there are a few other basic security and access protection steps to keep in mind.

For one thing, never let yourself lose both your mobile device and your written one time access code list. Losing either one creates an enormous security breach if hackers already know your basic Google password, and losing both can cause you to get locked completely out of your own account unless you can find a previously used device to access it from.

Never leave your Google account logged into on any device you’re not actually using; always log out right after you’ve finished whatever you were doing, even on your own personal devices.

Don’t share access to your Google accounts with anyone you don’t completely trust, even if there is a practical reason for giving them access.

Google’s program policies do not allow you to modify your Adsense code which artificially inflates ad performance or harms advertiser conversions. In most cases, you’ll want to copy paste the code exactly as you get from the generator.

However, most sites today are going responsive and you’ll want to ensure that you use the correct size ads when your visitor is viewing your blog from a mobile device. Now, Google has modified the policy that allows you to modify the code for a responsive design.

Add to All is a powerful plugin that will allow you to add custom code or CSS to your header, footer, content or feed.

Add to All comes with out of the box support for Google Analytics, Statcounter, Kontera, with other third party services in the pipeline. With this plugin installed, you do not need to edit your theme files every time you switch themes. You can also add custom CSS styles to your header as well as any HTML code to the header or footer of the theme. The plugin gives you the power to add content to your feed in addition to adding a copyright notice. This is especially useful if you have any website scraping your feeds.

Step 1: Install Add to All

1. Navigate to Plugins within your WordPress Admin Area
2. Click “Add new” and in the search box enter “Add to All” and select “Keyword” from the dropdown
3. Find the plugin in the list (usually the first result) and click “Install Now”

Step 2: Add Text before Post Content

Navigate over to the plugin settings page. You’ll find this under Settings » Add to All.

The plugin is feature rich and gives you tonnes of options and you can easily access them by clicking on the relevant tabs. For us, we need to navigate to the Content Options tab.

As shown in the screenshot above, simply enter the HTML that you would like to display before the post content.

If you scroll further down this page, you’ll find options to display custom text before or after content either on single pages or sitewide. I use my Adsense code in the box above to display ads before and after the post content on single pages.

The last set of options in this tab is Adjust content filter priority. This option allows you to control when WordPress should process this content and display it. By default all filters are set to 10, so if you want this content to be added last, then set it to a large number. I’ve set it to 999 and this allows me to display the ads first of all, just below the title on this site.

I’ve always preferred Flickr as my primary place to store photos. I’ve maintained a pro account for several years now, even though I am just a “holiday photographer”!

Flickr continues to differentiate between free and pro accounts. Pro accounts continue to get unlimited storage, an ad free interface and stats.

Existing users can choose to go Ad-free as well for $49.99 per year or Double their space for $499.99 a year.

Since May 20, 2013, Pro accounts can no longer be purchased. You can enjoy unlimited storage as long as your Pro account is active. If your Pro account expires, it will revert to a free account with a storage limit of 1 Terabyte.
